Beyond the Brand: My Personal Reason for Starting Planet Saver

Hello, my name is Thomas Laar and I want to share a personal story of why I started Planet Saver. A few years ago I remember being at home and watching TV with my dad, It was just another Tuesday night when a news bulletin came up on screen, "The great pacific garbage patch is the world largest collection of plastic waste in the world spanning 6 million square Kilometres, Roughly three times the size of France". I couldn't believe it. My dad looked at me and said "if It's like this now, imagine what it'll be like for your kids when you have them" it hit me like a tonne of bricks, it's not everyday you find out there's a plastic island in the middle of the ocean three times the size of a country. I mean I knew Plastic waste was bad but I had absolutely no idea how large scale it was until I heard that news bulletin. Up to that point I recycled a lot at the time and still do but what's the point if we still throw away plastic that can't be recycled?, I knew sure enough if we continued down this path, then there would be a point of no return and that's a terrifying thought. The reality is if we have that attitude of 'Well I won't be here when it does go downhill' then we're just being like everyone else, and if you act like everyone else, then you'll get what everyone else has got...Guilt, and that's not where we want to be. I'm always hard on myself and always felt as though I could be doing more, not just for me but for our children's future, that's how I came up with the Idea to reuse everyday items and to find more eco-friendly alternatives to prevent plastic waste ending up in landfill and the ocean. I've always been the shy, no-fuss guy who stays out of the spotlight but I felt so compelled to start a website and community that actually wants to make a difference for future generations and focuses on saving the planet one step at a time, and that's why I Started Planet Saver.
